For those of you who know musical notes and want to have REAL personal music, rather than MusicShake

it is called Noteworthy Composer
you can place your own musical notes, have several bars (layers) playing at same time
time signatures, key signatures, tempo changes---the whole lot
different musical instruments (some even sound effects)-but no good percussion, so you cant really have a rock band

there is a evaluation version, but it lasts for 30 days and you can only save a song 9 times (i think that you can save a new file instead to get around this)

or you can shell out $39 and register it
( i think i found a full unregistered version without the 30 day on thepiratebay)
MUST HAVE WINDOWS
YOUR COMPUTER MUST BE ABLE TO PLAY MIDI FILES (if you hear no sound this is the most likely reason)
