Post laptop help

my aunt let me borrow her laptop and i cant get the sound to work when i plug my headphones in can someone please help me? its a dell inspiron 500m with windows xp

yeah, that happened to me with my laptop. i fixed it by just restarting the pc

ive turned it off and on a few times since i tried when i put a cd in to play it says it has no sound device to play it on even though my headphones are in

is the sound on?. is it turned up?. are you plugging it into the right port?..do the head phones work?... maybe the port is shot?

check the seeting to see if you have it on digital output only, for me when its like that the sound wont work

also make sure you have all the drivers you need, the software for you soundcard installed (i think its software)

so i have to install a soundcard because it says something about how i might need to install the sound for it

open run and type in dxdiag and go into the sound section if there is nothing specific in there (eg the name of the sound car) you need to download the drivers for that sound card
