Default Can't Logon To Windows

I have Windows XP Home Edition SP3. Yesterday my computer started to get screwy so I restarted it. Then when I got to the Welcome Screen there were no users to click on. I hit ctrl+alt+del twice to go to the old logon. I entered all my stuff and variations of it a dozen times. Then I tried admin and it tried to logon, but after 5 seconds it said it wasn't the right stuff. I restarted and hit F10 to go to the recovery partition and it said there wasn't an operating system. Then I rebooted and tried MS Recovery Console at the OS selection scree. It came up with 3 options to choose from.

1: D:\MiniNT <- didn't do anything
2: D:\I386 <- didn't do anything either
3: C:\WINDOWS <- asked for a password, but there wasn't one set. once I got in it wouldn't do anything

Drive D is the recovery partition, but now it won't work. The hard drive was probably destroyed by a virus. If anyone has an idea of what to do or any suggestion of what to do that would be awesome. I will probably just reformat the whole thing and start over.

Have you tried booting your computer with linux and running a virus scan on your C drive? I had a similar situation and it worked for me.

You may b able to kill your recovery partition and install an OS there, how much space is there?

Or get "Knoppix" its a bootable linux from CD and you can atleast copy your files to a external drive.

I got it all figured out. I did a check disk on all the partitions and then did a fix disk to get rid of several bad sectors that were on my computer. It restored them and then told the computer that these sectors were bad. I don't know what caused it to become bad, but after I fixed it I started the computer in safe mode and did a system restore to a previous date.
