Default server software/os

Im making a server, and i was wondering what kind of software i should use. I was going to get windows server 2003 but 2008 is coming out soon, and i heard free BSD is great and secure, but is really really hard to set up.

Im looking to make the server host a web page, ftp and be a private server for games e.g. bf2, halo, and is it possible to host xbox and xbox 360 games? Either way once i get it running, it could be tutorial ninjas private game server, well almost private, it would also be my schools.

So which os-s do you guys suggest, and what software? Apache, Quake?

Sorry if this comes off rude but 99% of people in the US cannot run a game server for TN out of your house. You may think its fast which it is for downloading but your upload rate is horrible, which is for games.

On the other note do not go with Windows Server it is trully a piece of shit, just get any linux distrobution(i have ubuntu server running my apt).

and for those who are like wtf your apt runs on ubuntu?

It will
  • Turn lights on @ off.
  • Stream content to the appletv(live tv, + recorded
  • Makes coffee in the morning so it is ready when i get up.
Future:
  • Remote start my car in the AM so it is a good temp inside by the time i get to it for the 5 minute commute to work on rainy or hot days(yes it will know if the condition outside) otherwise ill bike
  • Stream a message to my TV+Computers when sum1 pushes the doorbell

does it require huge amounts of bandwith, or could it be set up for high upload rates, or could you have 2 internet connections one set for only download and one set for upload?

off topic how would you get it to start car, i know they have remote turn on with remotes, but how with you comp, and for the doorbell would you connect some more wires to the doorbell and set up something that would be waiting for a charge from the doorbell and when it recieved the charge it would tell the server to run a program that displays on tv/comp? and wouldn't the sound of the doorbell be warning enough?

It requires a constant good upload, I don't know of any plans for just upload that are cheap and you still need good download to get data from the clients. So you need good overall bandwith, when you download a torrent or something you will be killing everyones connection to the game.

The car works by sound, the doorbell would be two devices, the actual bell and then a small box that talk to eachother via RF. But the box also has a wifi + usb plugin to do messages. It is just a project i would like to do when i get the time, I could also integrate a webcam to see who it is at the door. The sound is enough but it just isn't geeky.

No ive always used the server its a minimalist dream its a linux core and apt. Doesn't even come with openssh. You put what you want on it.

Well I don't think you will get the BW you need for a server but if you give me access to your server I will help set it all up. And protect it from getting hacked.

so it wouldn't be very fesible to host even small games like 4v4 halo? I'd like to try and set up myself, but it would be great if you could get is all nice and secure. I mainly just want to learn a whole lot from doing this and get some experience with it.
