new to unbuntu

so i just got my old laptop back from my gf so i figure ima install unbuntu on it

welllll its only got a 40 gig hdd and 256 ram, the installer i found on the site says it requires 376 ram, but i searched for the speacs and it says it only needs 64

what am i doing wrong?

i had ubuntu for a while .. but i couldnt figure out how to install anything on it for the life of me!

well that might have been because you were trying to install non linux programs?

nope i was installing linux programs.. but it was all like source code. and then you suppose to do something with the terminal? idk i got confussed.. im going to go buy linux for dummies or something

64mb is the bare minimal for a commandline only(no gui, which means no mouse, icons, graphics, etc). If i get time this weekend i will do some experimenting we may be able to change some packages around or "hack" it on a 256mb machine.

im running windows with 512 mb!. cuz ddr ram is just to dam expensive.. you would think ddr2 would be more expensive buts its not!!!

dont worry man i ran ubuntu on my old desktop with 256 megs of ram, it worked great, it was fast, and i could even enable the desktop effects and it still performed great

i just cant get it to install, it wont run the live cd, and i got a cd to i think work, butit makes the screen fuzzy and un-usable

try an earlier version. version 7.04 worked great on my old machine
