Default .mkv files

ok...i looked up a list of software compatibal with .mkv...and i have one thing called media player classic, and it says it's compatible with the files...but they still won't play, and i can't convert them...why?

thanks, i found one lol, it's called KMPlayer, and it's pretty decent, no lag on any files either, which is a problem i've been having
