Default how do you rip vids from an original dvd?

i'm not sure if i'm doing it right...right now i'm attempting just to drag and drop the video files onto my computer....but are there any programs that do this flawlessly?

magic dvd ripper

works amazingly easy

that will make it into a avi / whatever else you want
